Here is a quick recap of Saturday’s 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup games, starting with Jayson Castro’s return in a TNT win.
TNT makes it two straight
After missing the first two games of the conference, veteran guard Jayson Castro helped the TNT Tropang Giga come away with a 110-91 win over the undermanned Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. Castro, who has finally recovered from an ankle injury, came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six assists. He was one of the five TNT players who scored in double digits, with import Cameron Oliver’s 21 markers leading the way.
The two teams traded haymakers in the first half, but it was the Tropang Giga’s masterful third-quarter performance that spelled the difference. TNT’s offense clicked during that span, and the best thing was they held Rain or Shine to only 14 total points.
Rey Nambatac’s 20 points led the way for Rain or Shine, who missed the services of their import Steve Taylor Jr. (health and safety protocols).
Converge turns back huge meralco rally
The Converge FiberXers maintained their composure in the clutch, turning back a huge Meralco Bolts rally to win the game, 106-99. Quincy Miller produced a game-high 29 points, while Maverick Ahanmisi tallied 21 markers, including a dagger three-pointer that helped seal the deal for the FiberXers.
Converge had a big 20-point advantage entering the second half, but Johnny O’Bryant and the Meralco squad fought back to eventually take the lead in the fourth quarter. But Ahanmisi and Miller carried Converge’s offense in regulation, drilling one big shot after the other to fend off the Meralco comeback.
O’Bryant topscored for the Bolts with 27 points, while Aaron Black stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Meralco, who played without star Chris Newsome for the third straight game, fall to a 1-3 record.
