The Rundown from PBA Friday: FiberXers Survive Beermen’s Late Comeback

If you missed Bay Area Dragons’ historic performance against the Terrafirma Dyip, or Converge FiberXers’ hard-fought win against the San Miguel Beermen, here is a quick recap from Friday’s 2022 PBA Commissioner’s Cup doubleheader.

Converge vs San Miguel

Miller, FiberXers overcome Beermen’s comeback attempt

Quincy Miller flirted with a triple-double as Converge held their ground to spoil San Miguel’s late comeback, 106-102.

The 29-year-old NBA veteran filled the stat sheet with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and 9 blocks to help the FiberXers avoid a scary turnaround.

Aljun Melencio played big, scoring 18 points along with 7 dimes, while Jeron Teng sparked Converge’s bench scoring with 13 points along with 8 rebounds.

Mike DiGregorio added 12 points, while Maverick Ahanmisi continued to be a solid contributor, finishing the game with 10 points and 7 rebounds as the FiberXers improved to a 3-2 slate.

CJ Perez played like an import as the pride of Lyceum of the Philippines University stuffed the stat sheet with 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists for the Beermen who dropped their second straight game.

Mo Tautuaa continued to fill the hole Junemar Fajardo left as the Fil-Tongan big man finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Beermen failed to turn the tables.

Newly-acquired reinforcement Devon Scott, who replaced Diamond Stone, debuted with 16 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists.

The FiberXers waxed hot from the tip-off and led by as many as 17 points. The Beermen stormed back and grabbed the lead halfway through the fourth quarter, 96-95, off a crucial basket from Tautuaa.

The Beermen even extended their lead to 5, 100-95, courtesy of Perez’s lay-up. Converge then answered with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 102-100, with 3:17 remaining, and never looked back.

Nicholson, Dragons manhandle the winless Dyip

Former NBA veteran Andrew Nicholson led the onslaught with 37 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes of action, as Bay Area trounced the lowly Terrafirma, 130-76.

Qilong Zheng contributed 17 points and 7 rebounds, while Jianhua Song had 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists to give the Dragons their 6th win. Songwei Zhu had a perfect shooting night, scoring 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Lester Prosper had another solid performance with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Juami Tiongson was the only local to crack double-digit scoring with 21 points for the Dyip. Terrafirma lost their 22nd straight game.

Joshua Munzon had yet another inefficient offensive game, finishing with 9 points on a disappointing 2-of-10 shooting.

The Dragons’ 54-point win is the largest margin in a PBA game in the last 36 years.
